The Bat Ayin was asked about the Sages' description of a heavenly voice issuing from Mount Horeb: if it is meant to awaken people, how can it be heard? According to the account, he did not answer at first.
The Sentence Heard in the Street
Later, while walking in the street, he heard someone call on another person to fear God. The Bat Ayin drew his companions' attention to those words as an awakening they should heed. The tradition teaches attentiveness: even a sentence heard in daily life can remind a person to pause and examine his path.
