When plans were made to expand the Bat Ayin's study hall in Safed, a lawyer living nearby opposed the construction. He went to court and, according to the story, won the case and was awarded a large financial penalty.
The First Check
The synagogue officials explained that they could not pay the full amount at once and asked to pay in installments. The lawyer agreed, and one official gave him the first check toward the debt.
In the middle of the night, loud knocking was heard at the official's home. The lawyer stood at the door, pale and agitated, asking to return the check immediately. He said he had dreamed of a dignified man who introduced himself as the author of Bat Ayin and warned him to withdraw the claim.
The Documentation at the Study Hall Entrance
According to the testimony attributed to Rabbi Yaakov Zeide, the lawyer withdrew his demand for the penalty. The account also states that a photograph of the check and a description of the incident were displayed at the study hall's entrance in Safed.
